WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU OVERLY RIPE BANANAS

Saturday morning I woke up, made a cup of tea, and headed straight for a banana with peanut butter. But one glance at my quickly browning, mushy banana and my dream was crushed. I pouted for a quick second and looked longingly at my favorite, grind-it-yourself peanut butter from Whole Foods. Why me? Why would my banana disobey my one demand for perfectly yellow, slightly firm conditions? (I am often my most dramatic first thing in the morning.)

But then I had a moment: What if I turned these ick bananas into something even better? And so, after a quick walk to Trader Joes, I had a new saying and a new outlook.

I followed this receipe for delicious chocolate chip banana bread doughnuts. I turned my frown right upside down, and then plopped a doughnut into my mouth. There shouldn’t be much in life that we can’t turn around. My devastation over “rotten” bananas is a great metaphor for most dissapointment in life. Isn’t there nearly always a silver lining? Sometimes I just need to be willing to walk to the grocery store to find it.
